Great Yarmouth College of Art & Design
Trafalgar Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
Designed by prolific local architect John William Cockrill, sometimes known as ‘Concrete Cockrill’ due to his fondness for the material, the steel frame and concrete Municipal School of Art, as it was originally named, opened in 1913. The building was robust enough to serve as the town’s Civil Defence Report Centre during the Second World War. Great Yarmouth College of Art and Design merged with Norwich School of Art in 1989 to form the Norfolk Institute of Art and Design. The Great Yarmouth building closed in 1996 and was left unoccupied for many years before being converted into eighteen flats for the Flagship Housing Group and the Homes and Communities Agency in 2011.

Matthew Cornford and I have some work in this. Great photographs of old art schools by Matthew and a bit of context from me.
